What Tanning Salons Don't Want You To Know: Part 1

Here's a quick rundown of UV rays: UVA penetrates deeper into your skin, and gives you a deeper longer-lasting tan. The tanning results from UVA usually do not show right away. It takes a day or so for the UVA to take its full effect on your skin, and tends to give your skin that ‘bronzed' color.

UVB only penetrates the top layers of your skin, and tends to give you that ‘reddish' hue. UVB is the primary culprit for sunburns, and the red color sometimes fools people into believing they are getting a better tan from beds with higher UVB content. On the contrary, you cannot tan burned skin. UVB is necessary for the tanning process, but too much can be very damaging.

All tanning beds have a mixture of UVA and UVB. High end tanning beds (like our Platinum bed) have a much higher ratio of UVA to UVB, which gives you better results. UVA penetrates deeper into your skin to give you a deeper darker tan that lasts longer, so you don't need to tan as often.

Since Royal and Spa has become one of, if not the premier tanning salon in Sonoma , we have become a target of several competitors. Some salons purchase low end, used beds to save money, and these beds may emit higher levels of UVB than UVA, and have fewer bulbs. Although you might get immediate redness on your skin (remember, UVB colors the top layers of your skin), you will need to tan more often to get similar results from a bed like our Classic 600.
